Web Hosting Essentials: Bandwidth
Aside from disk space, another important factor you should also look into when choosing the right web hosting plan is bandwidth. To put it in simple words, bandwidth is the term used by web hosting companies to describe monthly traffic limits. Most web hosting UK providers offer plans with more than enough monthly transfer limit or bandwidth. However, you need to look into your needs – based on the kind of site you are running and the expected number of visitors – so that you can pick the best web hosting plan accordingly.
If your site takes 50MB of disk space, for example, it is safe to assume that 50MB of bandwidth is required to access the site thoroughly once. Not all users will browse through the site, so 50MB bandwidth should be enough for 2 or 3 users in general. To make sure your site is accessible at all times, have at least 100 times the used disk space. Using the previous example, you would ideally want a web hosting plan with 5GB of bandwidth. Monitor your site’s traffic and see if larger amount of bandwidth is necessary; you should be able to assess the bandwidth use using the hosting plan’s control panel.
